Change: A Few Thoughts From Our President, Jeff Russell

Today, I want to talk about change. Well, I actually want to start by sharing a few questions to ask yourself and think about:

  • Are you comfortable with change? Or does it drive you crazy?
  • When something changes, what is the story you are telling yourself about that change?
  • Is there a way you could look at change differently?

Here is a very old Taoist story that I think puts change and how we see and deal with it into perspective:

There was once an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit. “Such bad luck,” they said sympathetically.

“Maybe,” the farmer replied.

The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses. “How wonderful,” the neighbors exclaimed.

“Maybe,” replied the old man.

The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy for what they called his “misfortune.”

“Maybe,” answered the farmer.

The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army. Seeing that the son’s leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out.

“Maybe,” said the farmer.

Our interpretation of change affects if we see change as an opportunity or a disaster, and also shapes how we respond.

In the upcoming weeks, think about a change or crisis that may have occurred and how you could have taken control and shaped it into an opportunity.

Life is good. – Jeff
